The aim of No Mining, Know Mining is to establish a centralized repository of resources for understanding the mining industry in both the United States and abroad.

Mining Today

In safeguarding our nation’s interests and securing our future, the United States relies heavily on a consistent and stable supply of many minerals. In today’s interconnected world, the importance of mining cannot be overstated—it is the cornerstone upon which our modern way of life is built. Mining is lifesaving, life changing and life sustaining.

“We need more mining. 100% agreed.”

The Essential Role of Minerals: Why They Matter

Why are minerals important? Have you ever paused to ponder what every day items are made of? It might not be a typical train of thought, but it holds considerable significance in the realm of mining. While farmers cultivate the food we rely on, minerals that are crucial for the green energy transition and basic sustenance cannot be grown. The adage If It Can’t Be Grown, It Has to be Mined rings true. Electricity, a necessity in modern life, hinges on resources like copper, which cannot be cultivated. Consider your smartphone, medical equipment, aircraft, automobiles, and renewable energy infrastructure—none of these can be grown either. America’s security relies on the availability of critical minerals essential for protecting our nation, which is why we need responsible and strategic management of these resources. Our nation’s infrastructure relies immensely on concrete and asphalt aggregate products. The National, Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) puts is best by saying “Rocks Build America.”

See How Minerals Interact With Our lives

Family

In our everyday lives, countless devices scattered throughout our homes owe their existence to mined minerals. From smartphones to kitchen appliances, each gadget we rely on is intricately linked to the extraction of essential natural resources. These minerals play a vital role in shaping our modern lifestyles and communities.

Healthcare

In this health care environment, nearly every device and tool depend on mined minerals for manufacturing. Whether it’s diagnostic equipment or life-saving medications, these essential resources form the cornerstone of both the room’s functionality and patient care.

Wind Turbine

In our shift towards greener energy sources, mined minerals stand as indispensable elements in the production of wind turbines, solar panels, and batteries for electric vehicles—such essential resources are pivotal in driving forward sustainable solutions.

Why does the U.S. heavily rely on critical minerals from other countries?

The shift towards green energy demands a broader spectrum of minerals compared to previous years. With advancing technology, there’s a growing requirement for specialized minerals like rare earths, lithium, and graphite, vital for battery manufacturing—the cornerstone of electric devices—all of which necessitate mining. In the past, the lengthy permitting process made it economically unfeasible to wait several years to open a mine. So importing materials was often the more convenient and cost-effective choice.

Why is the U.S. Falling Short in Mining Opportunities?

The current mine permitting process in the U.S. is flawed, partly due to historical factors. On average, obtaining permits for metal or specialty mineral mines can take between 7 to 15 years, with even longer timelines if located on federal lands. In contrast, a straightforward sand and gravel aggregate mine can secure permits in less than a year, depending on its location.

Cripple Creek Mine, Colorado

“The US Federal mine permitting process is broken, and on any given day, it can be any number of things that go wrong. The abrupt shift in policy between administrations, agency delays, slowness to process paperwork, a simple question on a requested payment, litigation – those are just a few of the challenges that all too often add months or years to this process. Improving the federal permitting process is the best way to strengthen our mineral security, which is rapidly becoming our nation’s Achilles’ heel.”

Transforming the Reputation of Responsible Mining

Numerous countries lack mining regulations safeguarding human health, safety, and the environment, in contrast to the rigorous standards upheld in the U.S. and other advanced nations. This disparity has led to conflicts in regions where environmental and human health concerns are disregarded. Unregulated mining in the past not only caused significant environmental damage but also jeopardized the safety of workers. Today, the U.S. has implemented more policies and technologies to prevent a recurrence of this dark chapter in history.

The International Council on Mining & Metals (ICCMM) has been driving sustainability in the industry since 2001. Representing a third of global mining giants, they develop and promote ethical practices through their Mining Principles, collaborating with stakeholders for positive change. By providing resources, advocating for responsible policies, and addressing issues like climate change and water management, the ICCMM strengthens accountability and community engagement, solidifying its role as a key player in shaping a sustainable future for mining and metals.

Mining has long faced criticism for its environmental and social impacts, tarnishing even responsible companies’ reputations. However, initiatives like Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting and the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) aim to change this narrative. ESG reporting measures and discloses a company’s performance across environmental, social, and governance factors, fostering trust with investors and communities. IRMA provides independent, third-party assurance of mining practices against rigorous standards, adding credibility to companies’ claims of responsible mining. By achieving IRMA certification, companies signal their commitment to ethical and sustainable operations, overcoming the industry’s negative reputation.
